As a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) you may provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill, injured, convalescent and disabled persons in such settings as hospitals, clinics, private homes, schools, sanitariums and similar institutions. The required 1530-hour course is competency-based with a structured curriculum combined with clinical rotations in health care facilities. California State exam required for licensure, (NCLEX-PN).

Starting Pay: $18 - $22 per hour.

Course Topics Include: Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, Psychology, Nutrition, Normal Growth and Development, Pharmacology, Diseases and Disorders, Patient Care, Procedures and Human Relations.

Course Fees Include: Tuition, consumable supplies, certificate of completion and clinical rotation. Entrance exam, books, school uniforms, CPR training, health screenings, background check, drug testing and licensing fees will be additional. NOTE: Entrance exam and textbook fees are non-refundable.

Continuing Education Units: Certified Nursing Assistants earn 48 hours of CEUs.

Application

Step One

Schedule and take the required Basic Math, English and Language Assessment Test. (fee is $100.00 and is nonrefundable) upon scheduling the test you will receive a confirmation letter and study guide in the mail. Sign up for the Vocational Nursing Entrance Exam.

Submit the items listed below as your Information Application package. The due date for Interest Application packages for each class is identified in the schedule table.

  • a. Completed Vocational Nursing Interest Application (download it now)
  • b. Proof of high school completion or equivalent (Copy of diploma, transcript or GED certificate). If foreign transcript or certificate (not US), must be evaluated by a transcript evaluation service to determine equivalency to US standards. (You may download this list of transcript evaluation service providers, or consult NACES for their list of providers.) Foreign applicants must complete this process prior to submitting interest application.
  • c. Copy of California Nursing Assistant Certification or- Clinical Medical Assistant certificate of completion. Candidates may provide proof in the form of a letter from current or previous employer confirming essential skills of job meet these criteria.
  • d. Two letters of recommendation for entry into the program. (Should be from an employer, instructor or other relevant person, a letter from a relative is not acceptable.)
  • e. A letter from you to the admission committee stating why you should be admitted into the program. Grammar, punctuation and presentation do count!
  • f. A copy of your TEAS exam score sheet with a minimum score of 68% overall. Sign up to take the Exam.
  • g. Optional: Proof of previous education and experience. (Official transcript, in a sealed envelope from the granting institution, from accredited vocational, practical or registered nursing courses, psychiatric technician courses, armed services nursing courses or courses in anatomy & physiology, nutrition, psychology, pharmacology, or normal growth and development. Must be within the last five (5) years.)

NOTE: The Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners are required by law to review your history of previous criminal convictions. In certain cases the board may withhold licensure.

Step Two

Once Boston Reed receives your completed Vocational Nursing Interest Application Package, you will be scheduled for an oral interview. Your interview will take place within 3 months of the proposed start date for the course you are applying for.

Selection Procedure

All applicants who meet the minimum requirements for admission will be considered. Twenty (20) students will be accepted into the Vacaville class, Twenty-Five (25) students will be accepted into the Martinez class. Five (5) alternate students will be selected.

Selection is based upon the following:

  • Score on Basic Math, English and Language Assessment Test.
  • Work-experience.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Letter from candidate.
  • Oral interview.
  • Previous education and experience (as listed previously).
  • Application status of candidate (i.e. placement of previous alternate student).

In the case that two (2) candidates are equally qualified for the last slot in the class, selection will be based upon the date of the application. Alternate students will be allowed to complete classes up to the commencement of the clinical experience. If a slot does not become available, the candidate will be accepted into the program for the next start date. An updated application must be submitted at that time. Students who drop or take a leave of absence may return only if there is an available slot and the written request to return is accepted by the admissions committee. All candidates will be notified by mail of admission into the Vocational Nursing Course within 30 days of the start date of the course.

Once a candidate is accepted for admission into the class, you will submit your $200.00 application fee along with the Course Application form. Payment Schedule: $200 application fee to reserve a seat in the class. Once admitted, $7,450 + $900 (non-refundable textbook fee) is due the 1st class session. $2793.75 is due every three months thereafter. This will ensure payment in full prior to graduation. Please note that the course is 97 weeks in length (excluding holidays). Use the separate Boston Reed application form to register for this course once notified of admittance. (Please also note that TFC financing is not available for this course.)

Program Fees and Prerequisites

Vocational Nursing: Fees - $200 non-refundable application fee + $900 non-refundable textbook fee + $3,000 consumable supplies and equipment fees + $3,750 administrative expense + $23,050 tuition = $30,900 total fees due from student.

In order to enroll, you must be chosen for admittance by the admissions committee, be at least 17 years of age, have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent and have completed a certified nursing assistant or clinical medical assistant course. Competency in, or completion of, a basic computer operations course is required.

Students will complete a minimum of 1530 hours of study. Before the clinical experience begins each participant will be required to show proof of completion of CPR for the healthcare provider, proof of a current physical examination, tuberculosis screening, background check, drug testing and immunizations. Obtaining CPR, physical, TB screening and immunizations is the student's responsibility. This course provides the student with 54 semester units of college credit 18 semester units per module.

CREDIT GRANTING POLICY

All students admitted to the Vocational Nursing Program must meet the pre-requisites set forth for all candidates. In order to graduate from the program, each student must satisfactorily complete all objectives for each unit of instruction.

Credit for Previous Education: Hourly credit upon receipt of an OFFICIAL transcript and course description will be granted for nursing education.

Accredited vocational or practical nursing courses:
Completed with a C grade or better within the last five years in an accredited vocational nursing program in California or a vocational nursing program offered in another state which is accredited by the official agency in that state.
Accredited registered nursing courses:
Completed with a C grade or better within the last five years in an accredited registered nursing program in California or a registered nursing program offered in another state which is accredited by the official agency in that state.
Accredited psychiatric technician courses:
Completed with a C grade or better within the last five years in an accredited psychiatric technician program in California or a psychiatric technician program offered in another state which is accredited by the official agency in that state.
Armed services nursing courses:
Satisfactorily completed within the last five years basic or advanced nursing courses offered by any branch of the Armed Services.
Approved Certified Nursing Assistant:
Completed with a C grade or better within the last five years a certified nursing assistant program in California or a certified nursing assistant program offered in another state which meets the approval requirements by the official agency in that state.
Related courses:
Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition, Psychology, or Normal Growth and Development completed within the last five years with a C grade or better in an accredited college, university or Western Association Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited adult education center.
Pharmacology:
The course must be completed within the last five years with a C grade or better in an accredited college, university or Western Association Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited adult education center. All students must pass a written pharmacology examination prior to pouring medications in clinical. Students must be able to safely pour medications as part of the clinical objectives. If the student is unable to do so, admission into the program on an advanced status will be denied.

Maximum hourly credit given for each unit of instruction equals that assigned to the unit of instruction in the program. Credit will be given in the module of the program where that unit of instruction normally occurs.

Students who are admitted to the program on a credit basis:

  • Are evaluated in the clinical area after admission into the program. Retention in the program is based upon meeting the clinical performance expectations of all students at that level.
  • Must complete a minimum of Module Three.
  • Will be evaluated on course objectives covered in the current module as well as past modules.
