Distance Learning for All Vocational Students

The Need

Boston Reed's "Career Garden" curriculum for Career Preparation helps adult schools facing these needs:

  • Workers in every industry need Career Preparation skills to be successful.
  • Many adult school students have little time for additional traditional classes because of work commitments.
  • Many adult schools have small career training programs in which filling a classroom for a Career Preparation course may be difficult.

Career Garden Content

Career Garden provides an independent learning module for each of these key Career Preparation skill areas:

  • Study Skills
  • Setting Career Goals
  • Networking & Information Interviews
  • Resumes
  • Interviews
  • Teamwork
  • Customer Service
  • Working with Difficult People
  • Stress Management
These are clearly cross-industry skills valuable to students in any career path. Schools can use as many of the modules as appropriate for their students, and may use them in any order.

The Mode

  • Materials can be viewed online or printed out from the Career Garden Website.
  • Take-home lessons present career preparation skills and direct students to practical assignments and reflection on their experiences.
  • Teacher meets with student at school or at work to review work and introduce next lesson.
  • Schools can assign Career Garden to students in face-to-face technical training classes as a valuable "soft skills" compliment.
